Gianfranco Ferré (1944–2007) trained as an architect before founding his Milan house in 1978, and he carried that discipline into fashion as “the architect of fashion.” His work is defined by sculptural tailoring, bold volumes, and the elevated white shirt he made a signature. From 1989 to 1996 he simultaneously served as couturier at Christian Dior, the first Italian to lead the French house.
