Gianni Versace founded his Milan house in 1978 and rapidly made it synonymous with Italian glamour at its most operatic — draping supermodels in chainmail, safety pins, and Byzantine prints. His shows were events: Linda, Naomi, Cindy, and Claudia on one runway redefined fashion spectacle. He was shot and killed outside his Miami home on July 15, 1997, at the height of the house's powers.
