Issey Miyake studied graphic design in Tokyo and couture in Paris under Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy before founding his own label in 1970. His early work bridged East and West through cut and material, while his research projects — A-POC (A Piece of Cloth), Pleats Please, and eventually the 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE system — explored how a single piece of fabric or folded geometry could clothe the body without waste. He stepped back from designing the main RTW line in 1997 to focus on research, handing the label to Naoki Takizawa.
