Thierry Mugler founded his house in Paris in 1974 and spent nearly three decades building some of fashion's most theatrical spectacles — stadium shows with 6,000 spectators, costumes for pop stars, and collections that treated the body as something between sculpture and fantasy. His silhouettes — nipped waists, exaggerated shoulders, insect exoskeletons — remain immediately recognisable. He retired from fashion in 2002 and passed away in January 2022.
