Yamamoto trained under Chie Koike in Tokyo before founding his label and staging his first Paris show in 1981 alongside Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons — a debut that sent shockwaves through an industry accustomed to opulence. His work is defined by volume, darkness, and a deeply humanist sense of imperfection: clothes that wrap and shelter rather than expose. Over five decades he has remained entirely independent, treating each collection as an extension of an ongoing conversation about identity, gender, and time.
