Schiaparelli was founded in Paris in 1927 by the Italian-born Elsa Schiaparelli, a surrealist provocateur whose collaborations with Dalí, Cocteau, and Man Ray produced fashion's most philosophically rich body of work — lobster dresses, shoe hats, and skeleton suits that made clothing into ideas. The house closed in 1954 and was revived in Paris in 2012; under Daniel Roseberry since 2019, it has reclaimed its place as couture's most intellectually serious and visually arresting address.
